4 Ways to Reduce Boat Insurance Rates

Couple boatingSummer is here, which means it’s time to get back on the water. With the current price of fuel, you may be looking at saving on other expenses so you can afford boating this summer. One option is to look into reducing your boat insurance rate. Here are four ideas to explore.

Verify That Your Policy is Appropriate for Your Vessel

There are many varieties of boat insurance based on the type of boat you own. Some examples are sailboat, fishing boat, personal watercraft (such as a Jet Ski), yacht and houseboat. You should verify that your coverage is appropriate for your type of boat. You don’t want to pay for yacht insurance if you own a fishing boat.

Look Into Your Lay-Up Period

A lay-up period is the months of the year in which your boat may be out of the water. Check to see what the lay-up period is for your policy. If you will not be using the boat for longer than the standard lay-up period, contact your insurer to see if you can extend the lay-up period and save money.

Incorporate Safety Features

Just as safety features on your car reduce the cost of your auto policy, the same is true with boat insurance.  One example for boaters is wireless auto tethers, which kill the engine of the boat if a passenger falls overboard. Check to see which features your boat comes with and be sure to let your insurance company know about them. See if you could incorporate any simple, inexpensive upgrades to save on insurance premiums. The small investment can lead to savings over time since insurance premiums are charged every year.

Take a Boater Safety Class

Look into taking a boater safety class. Verify with your insurer that it will earn you a discount or ask if a class is available in your area that will qualify you for a discount. It is possible to save 5 percent a year just by taking a boating safety class.

By investigating these four insurance saving options, you may find considerable decreases in your premiums so you can enjoy more time on the water this summer!
