5 Things to Consider When Selecting Boat Insurance

boatSummertime is boating season and many Americans look forward to relaxing on their boats as much as possible. Before heading out on your boat, ensure you have the right insurance coverage so you can truly relax. Here are five things to consider when looking at boat insurance.

  1. What type of boat do you have?
Insurance will be different for different kinds of boats. You will need specific coverage depending on whether you are insuring a yacht, party boat, Jet Ski, sailboat, fishing boat or even a house boat. If you have yacht insurance for your jet ski, you are overpaying.

  2. Do you want seasonal or year round coverage?
Keep in mind that boats are still vulnerable even when they are out of the water. They are exposed to the potential of extreme weather, fire and could require significant repair or even replacement. You will likely want insurance that covers a variety of disasters in and out of the water.

  3. Look into coverage for more than just the boat itself.
You will want your insurance coverage to include items on your boat as well as the boat itself. Things like your navigation system, lifejackets and other equipment should be included. Also, consider having coverage for your boat trailer. Trailers can be stolen and are often impossible to recover. If the trailer is listed separately on your policy, verify that the coverage amount is adequate to replace the trailer.

  4. Does the insurance include help and towing?
You may find it desirable to have insurance coverage for if you require emergency services while on your boat. If you have mechanical failure you may need to be towed back to the dock. Help and towing protection will reimburse you for costs you incur in this type of situation.

  5. Liability?
If an accident occurs on the water or during severe weather, someone may be injured. Having liability for your crew and your guests will give you peace of mind in the event an unfortunate accident occurs.
