Tips for Launching Your Boat into Springtime

SpeedboatLaunching your boat into the lake using a boat trailer can be a tricky task, particularly if you’re not experienced at handling boat trailers. If you find yourself in a similar situation, it’s best to practice early in the season before the ramp gets too crowded. The following tips can help make your launch safer and simpler.

  • Before backing onto the boat ramp, install the drain plug and release the securing straps. Ensure that the lower unit is raised to prevent scraping and disconnect the trailer’s lights. And don’t forget, rig a line to your boat so it doesn’t float away after the launch.
  • When maneuvering the boat trailer, make use of your mirrors. Depending on the size of the boat, you’ll have limited visibility as you drive, so looking over your shoulder may not be as useful as when you’re not towing a trailer.
  • After turning the steering wheel, there’s a bit of lag time before the trailer will change direction. Make very gradual movements and don’t panic if the trailer doesn’t instantly respond—this is normal. Making a correction before the trailer has a chance to react can cause oversteering or the trailer to snake back and forth.
  • If you forget which way to turn the steering wheel to get the trailer to move in the correct direction—hint: the bottom of the wheel should be pushed in the direction you wish the trailer to move in—simply pick a direction and move very slowly until you see the results. There are only two options so, if you’re wrong, you know that the other way is obviously correct.

Learning to maneuver your boat trailer properly helps you get your boat safely in the water without accidental scrapes that may result in the need to file a claim.

It’s the perfect time to review your coverage. Call Casey Insurance Group at 888-537-1412 for more information on Miami boat insurance.
