5 Things Your Boat Insurance Does Not Cover

Little speedboatFinancially savvy boat owners know the importance of investing in a quality Florida boat insurance policy. Not only can it help safe guard you from financial ruin should an accident happen, but it may also cover smaller incidentals as well. But be warned: boat insurance policies do not cover everything. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you know what is not covered under your insurance policy. Here is a look at five things that are not covered under most boat insurance policies.

Normal Wear and Tear

As with most insurance policies, normal wear and tear is not covered under most boat insurance policies. If your boat is getting worn with age, don’t expect an insurance company to come to your rescue. Instead, make sure you prepare financially when you see that your boat is beginning to show age and wear.

Mold

A common issue that boat owners encounter is mold. It is only natural, with being in wet conditions so frequently, however, it can also cause health issues and reduce the structural integrity of your vessel. Unfortunately for boat owners, mold is frequently listed as a policy exclusion. Depending upon the extent of your mold issue, this exclusion can prove to be exceedingly expensive.

Zebra Mussels

The damage caused by zebra mussels can be significant if left unchecked and unfortunately, most insurance policies do not cover repairs for zebra mussel damage. Zebra mussels can cause exterior damage to your boat and are considered an invasive species. Zebra mussels are difficult to get rid of, and without the financial backing of your boat insurance policy, you will have to pay out of pocket to get rid of this intrusive growth.

Damage from Animals

Damage from animals whether a sea creature or otherwise are generally not covered under most boat insurance policies. If you want protection for damage caused by water faring animals, additional coverage is necessary. With all the sea faring creatures that could cause damage to your boat, you better be prepared to pay any damage out of your own pocket, because it’s not covered by your insurance.

Navigational Limitations

Many boat owners are not aware that their vessel may only be covered in specific areas. Prior to leaving the dock, make sure you have read over the navigational limitations cause in your boat insurance clause. Many policy holders would need additional coverage to be covered in international waters.
